After a 14-year-old student at William Floyd High School, located at 240 Mastic Beach Road, was arrested by the Suffolk County police for bringing a loaded gun to school, the William Floyd School District has announced the installation of metal detectors.

The gun was found while the student was being interviewed by a school administrator on an unrelated matter when the student was found to be in possession of a loaded gun on Friday, Oct. 18. At that time, school officials contacted police, who arrested the student.

The student, who is not being identified due to his age, was charged by Seventh Squad detectives with criminal possession of a weapon 2nd degree and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds. The juvenile was held overnight at the Seventh Precinct and was arraigned as a juvenile offender at First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 19.

Following the incident, during an emergency executive session meeting held on Oct. 21, the board of education decided to equip all designated entrances in each school K-12 with walk-through metal detectors.

“The process of selecting the best system has started and installation will begin as soon as possible thereafter,” a school spokesperson said. “We will keep the community informed as to the progress of this initiative.”
Additionally, according to the board, they will continue to discuss the development of policies and protocols for the initiative, which will be fine-tuned and shared as the process moves forward.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the William Floyd High School library. During this meeting, there will be a district security presentation, as well as a presentation by a member of the Department of Homeland Security, who works closely with the district on security matters.
