Third time’s the charm for the Bellport Chamber of Commerce, which submitted for a Brookhaven Coalition of Chambers grant for three years in a row. This year, thankfully, the chamber has been awarded $1,000 for the installation of a new welcome sign at the corner of Sunrise Highway Service Road and Station Road.
The old sign, chamber vice president and grant writer LuAnn Thompson said, is about 12 years old and deteriorated. The grant will fund about half of the new, better positioned and weather-resistant sign to be placed at the same corner. The sign, once installed, will be higher up and moved slightly to accommodate a new electrical pole.
“We have been trying to get this sign redone for a while now,” she said. “It is really rundown, and during pandemic the chamber didn’t have much money coming in.”
The chamber plans to raise the other half of the cost, hopefully through business sponsorships in exchange for display signage. Thompson also mentioned the possibility of partnering with the local Rotary Club, which also has a sign on that corner, to fund the rest, and for to both be displayed on the “Welcome to Bellport Village” sign.
