Victory for inaugural flag football team

Posted

The inaugural Sayville varsity girls flag football team faced off against North Babylon on Saturday, April 8, and won the game with a final score of 19-12.

Olivia Moynihan, who scored three touchdowns for the Flashes, said of the key to her outstanding performance, “identifying an open lane and just going for it as fast as I could. I also think our team did a very good job setting picks and giving me a lane to run. Everyone did their job in the game and that’s what let us win.”

Coach Reade Sands, who led the boys varsity team to the Long Island Championship this fall, spoke of his pride for the first-ever flag football team and said, “They have come so far never playing football, learning an entire offense and defensive coverages, as well as what defensive leverage means.”

Sands remarked on the “tremendous” improvement the athletes made from their first scrimmage last month.

“With the athletes we have, we will absolutely be in the mix come playoff time,” said a confident Sands.

Christine Sarni, who is the president of the team’s Booster Club, said, “It has been so much fun watching the girls play so far.  They have progressed so much in such a short time.”

She credited the team’s coaches for encouraging and maintaining the work ethic and dedication that the athletes exhibited in their game.

“The football IQ of this team has risen exponentially and it shows in each game. They are gelling as teammates and finding their identity as a team,” said Sarni. “The Sayville community has embraced this new sport and is coming out to support the girls in the stands.”

The Booster Club will be hosting a Flag Family Fun Night Under the Lights on April 28.
