On Saturday, Jan. 6, the Bayport-Blue Point girls varsity track team competed in the Nike Armory Track & Field Center, New York City’s famed indoor track, where they broke an 18-year school record in the 4x400 relay, which is the fastest on Long Island. In addition, the team also holds the top spot for the 4x800 relay on Long Island and the 12th fastest 4x300 on Long Island.

“The team is No. 1 in New York State,” said Coach Vin Ungaro.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Ansley Brogan, Ava Brogan, Sophia McInnes and Maggie Yost ran a time of 4 minutes and 2 seconds (4:02.18).

Bayport-Blue Point athletic director Tim Mullins said, “Our 4x400 team has worked tirelessly to earn their current No. 1 ranking. Coach Ungaro ensures our student athletes are focused and prepared to compete each time they step onto the track.”

In a joint statement from the winning 4x400 team, the students said, “It was a great race; although most of us were not feeling 100 percent, we stayed positive and in return ended the race with an amazing time and personal records just about all around.”

The students said their hard work for the season was motivated with a plan to “get out aggressive” this season.

“It was fun to be able to run against some fast teams that were able to push us,” said the students.
