The Sayville Garden Club is proud to announce the recipients of the 2022 scholarship awards, Brendan Dargis and Kieran Schug. The club annually awards one scholarship each to a graduating high school student from Sayville and Bayport-Blue Point. The recipient is chosen on the basis of past activity, intended college study and future career desires in the areas of horticulture, landscape architecture and ecology.
Brendan Dargis, of Sayville, began his interest in ecology and landscaping at an early age through Scouts and his parents. His volunteer activities include leading cleanup activities at San Souci and Foster Avenue Park in addition to participating in removing invasive plant species from the park. At the age of 13 Brendan began his business career by mowing one lawn. He now has a considerable-sized incorporated business with 35 clients for whom he maintains yards and designs gardens. He will begin studying Horticulture and Landscape Development at SUNY Farmingdale in the fall.
Kieran Schug, of Blue Point, had such a passion for animals that he joined 4H and the veterinarian career exploration program at the Cornell Cooperative Farm his freshman year of high school. When Covid forced distance learning he found his way to a dairy farm for some hands-on activity. Here he discovered his expanded interest in agriculture, including the life-cycle of animals, the cultivation of crops, and the “labor of love to develop something from nothing”. Kieran’s looking forward to exploring the global aspects of the agriculture industry as he pursues his studies at Penn State University.
