Sayville varsity football ended the pandemic-shortened regular season in a smimilar fashion to how it began last Friday on Senior Night at Timothy J. Henck Field. It was another offensive power surge with plenty of post-route passes and a tight defense feasting on the quarterback.
Sayville defeated Westhampton Beach 47-21 as Sayville's offense broke the plane seven times. Jack Cheshire threw bullets all night for 500 passing yards. In the first quarter, Cheshire found Nate Casaburi in the end zone for a five-year score. Casaburi followed up the second drive of the game with a 49-yard catch and run for six points.
In the second quarter, Cheshire found Casaburi again for 22 yards and another half-dozen points. CJ Messina hauled in a 49-yard pass from Cheshire down to the opponent's two-yard line. Then, the QB took it himself for a two-yard touchdown run. Messina showed no mercy on the other side of the field, recovering a Westhampton Beach fumble with 56 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The Golden Flashes led 26-7 at halftime. In the third quarter, Messina con- tinued his dominance with an 86-yard bomb thrown by Cheshire and Messina waltzed into the end zone. On the 2-point conversion, Jack Pierce made a catch to add a deuce and the Purple and Gold led 34-14 with 1:01 to play in the third. On the defensive side, Max Llewellyn made a strip-sack fumble recovery for a touch- down. Mac Murtha caught a Cheshire pass and took it 59 yards to the house for their final scoring play. With this victo- ry, Sayville wins the league title and is awarded the No. 1 seed for the Division II semifinals to be played next weekend.
