Results of this year’s fire district elections

Posted

Community members voted in local fire district elections Dec. 8. The candidate with the highest votes, or highest number of write-in votes, was elected fire commissioner. They will remain in that position for a five-year term, commencing Jan. 1, 2021 and ending Dec. 31, 2025.

Check out the results below:

SAYVILLE

Marc Henig will take the vacant fire commissioner seat after he defeated challenger Christopher Bailey in a contested race. Henig received 475 votes, while Bailey got 301 votes. Roughly 776 total votes were submitted.

On his Facebook campaign page, Henig stated that he has 37 years of experience in fire service, EMS and law enforcement, and 20 years as a practicing attorney.

“I would like to thank each and every one who came out and supported me! All your hard work, likes and shares all made this happen! I am honored that you have put your trust in me to represent the district and community,” the post stated.

Bailey resigned from the commissioner spot last summer – and was removed by the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Sayville Fire District – for inappropriate conduct online. Bailey allegedly posted an online message showing a gun, which stated "Bring It," followed by an expletive, in response to a Black Lives Matter protest in Sayville.

BOHEMIA

In an extremely close race, Thomas Elias beat out challenger Kevin Albro by just one vote.

Elias received 186 votes to Albro’s 185. Elias will take on the five-year commissioner seat, which was previously held by Thomas Riedel.

WEST SAYVILLE

Rob Cabano was elected fire commissioner after he received 113 of the total 128 votes.

Cabano ran unopposed. The seat was previously held by Thomas McNamara. The additional 15 votes that were not directed toward Cabano were write-ins.

According to a Facebook post from the new commissioner, Cabano, of Oakdale, stated that he served as the chief of department from 2015 to 2016 in the North Babylon fire district. The Oakdale resident currently works as a local fire district manager, he stated.

BAYPORT

No one filed an official application for the vacant fire commissioner seat this year. However, Robert Fleming was named fire commissioner because he received the top number of write-in votes. Fleming served as the fire chief in Bayport.
