Despite the bad predictions the south shore came out relatively unscathed from Tropical Storm Henri as the storm trended eastward. Below is an update on reopenings and remaining watches in effect for the area.
Watches
A flood watch is in effect through late tonight August 23. The National Weather Service said an additional widespread rainfall of four to eight inches is possible this afternoon.
The NWS also released a rip current statement until Tuesday August 24 at 9 p.m.
Fire Island
Fire Island National Seashore will resume operations with limited visitor services on Monday
August 23, after experiencing minimal damage during Tropical Storm Henri. Designated lifeguarded beach areas will remain closed on August 23 due to hazardous surf conditions. Swimming is not advised at this time.
Visitor centers and concessions services may have limited hours and services, pending conditions.
Ferry service to Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove has resumed a normal schedule as well as all service to beaches serviced by Fire Island Ferries in Bay Shore.
Ken Stein, president of Sayville Ferry Service said the ferries fared well with the highest wind gust recorded at 31 mph.
“The communities are pleased with the way everything went,” Stein said.
Ferry service to Watch Hill and Sailors Haven will be offered on a rainy day schedule. Please follow the Davis Park Ferry, Sayville Ferry Service, and Fire Island Ferries company websites for the most up-to-date information regarding ferry service to Fire Island communities.
Park operations and visitor services will return to normal on Tuesday, August 24.
