The Board of Trustees of the Village of Brightwaters held their monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 7, and discussed upcoming events in the village as well as if Lagoon Drive should be converted to a one-way street.

During the Suffolk County Police Department Report, the officer reminded residents to lock their vehicles and to not keep their extra key fob in the car, as there has been an increase in car break-ins and leaving the fob allows thieves easy access to the vehicles.

Trustee Michael Dopsovic said that the biggest thing the highway department has been working on has been keeping storm drains clear of leaves. He asked residents that if they see one in the village that the department missed, to please give them a call.

Mayor Valdini reported that on Nov. 26, the village will be hosting photos with Santa at Wohseepee Cabin from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To schedule a reservation visit https://www.lastingimpressionsstudio.net/brightwaters-cabin-photos.

Mayor Valdini also noted that the board has been getting many letters concerning traffic recently. He said that residents are concerned about speeding on Ackerson Boulevard, Windsor Avenue, and Lakeview Avenue West. The mayor assured residents that the board will be looking into the issue. Similarly, the mayor said that he has asked code enforcement to be aggressive with the no-parking zones in the town to try and keep the Four Corners clear.

The board voted and approved permission to pay the Bay Shore Fire Department for 2022 Fire Protection with insurance in the amount of $325,893. This was originally budgeted for $355,029 but the insurance came in less than estimated.

The board voted and approved permission to pay Solitude Lake Management in the amount of $5,319 for treatment of phragmites in the lakes on Sept. 14 and phragmites cutting on Oct. 25.

The board voted and approved the appointment of Charles Casolaro as village attorney. Casolaro is currently the village attorney. Casolaro receives a $1,500 monthly retainer and $200 an hour, not covered under the retainer. In addition, the board voted and approved the appointment of Shawn Culilane as village justice prosecutor at a rate of $250 an hour, which includes pre-court preparation.

The board voted and approved the adoption of Local Law 12-2022 amending the Village Code to allow alcohol consumption at Walker Beach during the Brightwaters Oyster Festival to support local oyster farmers on Nov. 19 from 1 to 6 p.m.

The board held a public hearing to consider the adoption of Local Law 13-2022 amending Village Code to convert Lagoon Drive into a northbound one-way street. Valdini said that he was approached by some of the residents about making the street a one-way and that every resident on the street was contacted about the issue. The board received five responses—four in favor and one against. The board did not vote on the issue, as all of the trustees were not in attendance and they wanted more time to discuss the issue.

The next Brightwaters board of trustees meeting is slated for Monday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
