BAYPORT

REVIEW: New Momo’s menu hits the spot

Posted

A staple of Bayport’s nightlife and a haven for end-of-the-day drinks, Momo’s Too is the quintessential sports bar that serves up pitchers of cold draft beer and plates of hot wings for good times after a hard day’s work.

Recently, the menu has been revamped to for a more gastro-pub feel in addition to the bar classics.

We stopped in on a busy (but socially distanced) Saturday night to try some of the new dishes, and they did not disappoint.

Thai chili popcorn shrimp with Asian slaw
The first thing you’ll notice about the new menu is the Asian infusion with a flurry of wasabi-spiced tuna dishes (tuna tacos, tuna salad, tuna wontons). Owner Rich Comunale wanted to freshen up the menu with fish dishes as a South Shore place.

The shrimp is cooked in a light, almost tempura-like coating and is covered in a delightfully spiced sauce.

The slaw is the real surprise in this dish, offering a refreshingly light (not over-mayo’d) pairing to the heat of the shrimp.

Buffalo chicken empanadas
Momo’s had always had beef empanadas on the menu with a dusky, cumin/chili powder sauce. The buffalo chicken empanadas offered a more familiar American taste for patrons looking for an inventive way to enjoy wings.

Cowboy Burger
Featuring a whole new burger section with a build-a-burger option, Momo’s has kept many of the signature sandwiches and paninis like the Mugsy Bogues wrap. Longtime patrons can still request old favorites like the Cespedes or Lundquist burger.

The Cowboy Burger, a mammoth-sized meal and not for the faint of heart, includes two giant onion rings atop a fully decked-out burger. Described by my husband and Javits Center ceiling foreman, Sean Desmond, as “juicy and satisfying,” the Cowboy Burger offers some crispy red onions and jalapenos to earn its name. Definitely a two-hander feat.

Bacon, Egg And Cheese Burger
Perfect for a brunch, this burger hits all those Long Island flavors of home. The runniness of the egg sets off the crispness of the bacon and the whole dish is just asking to be washed down with a mimosa.

Dorito Crunch wrap
Not your Taco Bell variety. This loaded crunch wrap features grilled chicken with a delicate pepper play and some serious flavor. Plenty for one. Enough for two.

Rainbow cake
For a sweet finish, try the newest dessert, the rainbow cake. Light, fluffy tri-color cake with a decadent chocolate ganache.
