The Brookhaven Fire Department responded to a fire at the Brookhaven Town Landfill with two brush trucks at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The department took two brush trucks to the top of the active landfill where the fire was about 300 feet long by 50 feet wide. Crews helped control the fire with town fire marshals having it under control in under two hours.
Chief of the department Anthony Verni said they do not know what caused the fire and it is uncommon. About 20-30 members responded assisted by the South Country Ambulance; two firefighters were transported to the hospital for non-life threatening smoke inhalation.
