What started as a typical day at Cordello Elementary quickly took a turn for the worse when fifth-grade student Tyler White began choking.

According to the Central Islip School District, White was in the middle of a standardized test when he paused to take a sip of water, not realizing the cap was still on, which resulted in respiratory distress.

In security footage, White’s teacher could be seen running out of the classroom to alert security. Safety officer Jason Schafer responded immediately.

First, Schafer attempted to dislodge the water cap by hitting White on the back. When that wasn’t working, Schafer quickly and calmly performed the Heimlich maneuver, saving White’s life.

Officials said in a statement, “Officer Schafer stepped in during a nerve-wracking situation, stayed composed, and saved a child’s life.”

The Town of Islip honored Schafer for his lifesaving heroics during a board meeting on Tuesday, June 10.

Town of Islip supervisor Angie Carpenter retold the series of events that led to Schafer’s swift and calm actions.

“We are incredibly proud to recognize Officer Schafer today,” Carpenter said. “His quick thinking and willingness to act reminds us all what a difference a person can make.”

Schafer was then presented with a certificate acknowledging his heroism.

Also, during the ceremony, White enthusiastically showed his gratitude, confidently approaching the microphone and sincerely saying, “Thank you, Mr. Jay.”
