Girls golf season begins at home course

Posted

The Sayville girls golf team will have their season opener Thursday, March 27, at their home course in West Sayville, where they will be facing off against Connetquot.

Led by coach Sean Piotrowski, the students have been working on skill development and what Piotrowski said was a “focus on what we can control on the golf course. We can control what shot we try to hit and our pre-shot routine, but we can’t control bad bounces or poor weather.”

“We have really been working diligently on our short game, in the areas of chipping and putting. A positive team environment and having fun goes a long way,” said Piotrowski.

Although the season begins on March 27, the most anticipated match is also on West Sayville Golf Course on April 22 against Islip.

Sayville School District superintendent Dr. Marc Ferris said, “We are so proud of our varsity girls golf team.  They continue to work hard, and prepare for what promises to be another amazing season.”

Sayville girls golf came in third place last year at Suffolk County Golf Championships at Middle Island Country Club.

Maura Reilly, senior and co-captain, came in eighth last season at the Suffolk County Girls Golf Championships and represented Sayville at the New York State Championships at the Edison Club in Rexford, N.Y.

Meghan McMackin, junior co-captain, finished 15th last year in the Suffolk County Girls Championships.

Returning players, sisters Ava (11th) and Mia (10th) Schutte, are looking to learn from the captains and gain experience throughout the season.

This year’s team includes first-year varsity players, freshmen Kelly Stewart and Stella White.
