Contemporary African art exhibit ‘underscores collective resonance’

On Saturday, Jan. 13, the Patchogue Arts Council debuted their new exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Terry Street, “A Tapestry of Contemporary African Art.”

The exhibit will be on display at MoCA until March 17.

In collaboration with Montague Contemporary, curators Laura Day and John Cino selected works from contemporary African artists based on the continent, Europe, and the United States.

The media runs the gamut from textile, oil on canvas, mixed media, photography, and woodcut prints.

“The contemporary African art market has seen increased upward global trajectory across the past decade…new museums and galleries are opening across the continent and enhanced global recognition via dedicated exhibitions and fairs continue to bolster the exciting market,” said the curators in a dual-statement.

Artists in the exhibition hail from Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya, and Tunisia.

“We are aiming to introduce new audiences to the artists, by showcasing a broad array of themes that underscore their unique voices and styles, while underscoring their collective resonance,” said the curators.
