The Greater Sayville Civic Association held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 7 and presented a certificate of recognition to Andrew Wittman for his outstanding service to the community.
Wittman has previously served as a leader for the Sayville Civic, but is now exiting his role due to his candidacy for Islip Town receiver of taxes in the fall.
President of the Civic Association Christine Kelly-Sarni said, “Andy received the award for his service as vice president of the Civic for the last two years. He stepped down to pursue his goal of running for Town of Islip receiver of taxes and focus on his campaign. As vice president, Andy played a major role in growing our organization. He was active in all aspects including growing our membership, running campaign forums, fundraising, cleanups and more. Andy is a valuable asset to the Civic and even though he is no longer an officer, I look forward to a continued relationship and working with him in the future.”
According to Wittman, one of the most valuable roles he fulfilled with the Civic was organizing and strengthening the association’s bylaws to make intentions and elections run more transparently and in an official capacity.
Wittman has also been involved with Keep Islip Clean dating back to his high school years as a graduate of Bayport-Blue Point High School in 1995. The Civic Association, along with Wittman, has engaged in numerous cleanup initiatives around Sayville and in the most recent event, a cleanup on Lakeland Avenue and Sunrise Highway collected dozens of trash bags. Most memorably, Wittman remembers a cleanup of Green’s Creek, where he and other Civic members pulled out a whole refrigerator from the water.
Aside from the Sayville Civic, Wittman has been a lifelong volunteer at St. Lawrence R.C. Church in Sayville, Sayville Rotary Club, Sayville Historical Society, Bayport Fire Department, and coached Baymen soccer for the past seven years.
Greater Sayville Chamber president Eileen Tyznar said of Wittman, “I want to thank Andy for all his dedication and his extensive volunteerism to the community. His boundless energy for the betterment of Sayville has proven to make a difference and we are looking forward to seeing what he will do next!”
Wittman has gained the Conservative Party’s endorsement for the receiver of taxes race and will likely face a Republican primary in June.
