The Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce held its third meeting of the year on May 27. The meeting was held at 7 p.m. at the Bay Shore–Brightwaters Public Library. It was held the day after the Bay Shore Brightwaters Memorial Day parade and the last meeting before the start of the summer season, with many events slated to take place this summer.
“It was a beautiful day yesterday here in Bay Shore. The parade was amazing; [we] had our bands and fire department and just a really, really nice day,” chamber of commerce president Ed Fraser said. “We wound up getting a nice day; the weekend was kinda crappy, but yesterday it was a really nice day.”
The Bay Shore Arts Festival will be held on June 8 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Main Street. There will be about 90 artists and vendors and activities for all ages. The event will be sponsored by the Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce, South Shore University Hospital and Good Samaritan University Hospital.
Officer John Wright from the Third Precinct announced the next date for the community meeting. It will be held on June 3 at the Brentwood Public Library at 7 p.m. The meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month.
The Bay Shore Historical Society will be having its open house on June 7. It will begin at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with the barbecue beginning at noon. All are invited and there will be hot dogs and burgers.
The library announced it is co-hosting with the Village of Brightwaters and Brightwaters Historical Society, a 19th-century baseball game. It will take place on June 21 and there will be raffles, vendors and baseball trivia. The event is an opportunity for baseball fans to see what a baseball game looked like in 1864.
Additionally, the start of the summer reading program for all ages will begin on July 7. The program is for adults, teens and children. Last year, about $2,000 was given in prizes from businesses in Bay Shore.
Councilman Mike McElwee provided an update on the sidewalks on Gibson Street in Bay Shore. The project has been postponed until the fall, so as to not disrupt the sidewalks in the middle of the summer season. Parking meters on Main Street were replaced with functioning ones.
McElwee also announced the Town of Islip’s Music Festival on the Fairway on June 14 from 3 to 9 p.m. The event is free admission and parking and will be held at the Holbrook Country Club. It features live music and food vendors.
School news was presented by Bay Shore School District superintendent, Dr. Steven Maloney.
“I’d like to thank everyone in the Bay Shore-Brightwaters community for coming out last week to support our budget,” Maloney said, “to be able to provide all of the services that we continue to provide for our special education students, our ESL students, our advanced students and also all the mental health resources that we have been providing to all the students, K-12.”
The district will be offering new classes this upcoming fall. Physics in science of sports and science of sound and AP calculus will be offered at the high school. Broadcast journalism will be available at the middle school.
The Bay Shore United Methodist Church will be having a yard sale on July 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held the same day as Under the Big Tent by the United Methodist Church, which will be held at the Bay Shore High School from 12 to 4 p.m.
The dates for Alive by the Bay were announced once again. The festival dates are July 1, 15 and 29 and Aug. 12, with a rain date set for Aug. 19.
Head of the Bay Shore Retail Committee, Renee Goldfarb, announced the success of the first Sidewalk Sale held on May 10. With a plan to host the event bi-annually if successful, a date has already been set for the fall.
“We had our first Sidewalk Sale happen on May 10, the day before Mother’s Day, and it was a huge success,” Goldfarb said. “Retailers who participated brought their storefront outside to the sidewalk; they saw a massive increase of new customer traffic as well as local support.”
The fall Sidewalk Sale will be held on Sept. 20.
The next meeting will be held on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Bay Shore–Brightwaters Public Library.
