Bayport-Blue Point’s BSA Cub Scout Troop 130 held their first pancake breakfast for Santa at the Blue Point Fire Department on Sunday, Dec. 3.
“We wanted an event that involved the kids as well as the volunteer parents and keep it in the community,” said troop leader and father, Eric Scottaline.
The money raised will go towards awards, belt loops, camping trips, and guest speakers.
This past September, a guest speaker on birds of prey came in for a presentation to the 40-scout troop, and Scottaline said such events were highly anticipated by the scouts and their families.
“We all pay our dues in the beginning of the year and instead of charging for each individual thing, we use fundraiser money to keep costs down,” said Scottaline.
The idea for the pancake breakfast as a fundraiser came up when the parents of the current Cub Scouts became the advisement committee after the previous group graduated into Boy Scouts after fifth grade.
The troops meets once a month with all 40 members and twice a month in “dens” of five to 14 members (divided by grade).
Setup for the pancake breakfast began at 7 a.m. and doors opened to the community at 9 a.m.
Platters included pancakes with M&Ms, hash browns, breakfast sausage, with choice of hot tea, iced tea, or coffee.
