According to Brookhaven Town spokesman Jack Krieger, the Bellport Overlay hearing is adjourned. The planned Nov. 18 town vote has been cancelled and no future date has been discussed.
No other comments were discussed at Monday’s Nov. 15 town work session about this issue and the reason for the adjournment and no other comment was issued from the town.
Several calls to councilman Michael Loguercio, who has championed the overlay district, were not returned at press time.
If the overlay district were approved, it would allow Gleneagle Green developer Peter Florey, D & F Development Group LLC principal, to transform an area on Montauk Highway with commercial businesses as well as a continuance on Atlantic Avenue, with affordable housing. The commitment represents an approximately $50 million investment in what’s called the Montauk Atlantic Avenue project.
Florey has already constructed 70 affordable housing apartments on Atlantic Avenue next to the Boys & Girls Club of the Bellport Area, and is close to offering a lottery for those interested. He personally presented his plan at the Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance on Nov. 4 with the Greater Bellport Coalition that included interested residents, pastors and county officials attending, as well as Zoom participants.
Florey has bussed community residents to another affordable housing co-op complex he developed in Melville to witness how its run.
Greater Bellport Coalition chair John Rogers said the overlay district would allow the construction of affordable housing units; “otherwise, the rents would be too high for residents as well as commercial businesses,” he said. “It allows that extra density to allow the investment; otherwise, it’s not financially allowable, such as Peter’s proposal.” n
