To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Bay Shore Historical Society hosted the Bay Shore High School Women’s Empowerment Club. This was the club’s first speaking engagement to a public audience. The presentation “Bridging the Generational Gap: Uniting Women Across Ages for Progress” focused on issues that women face and the ongoing fight for equality. The panel discussed many of the issues that they felt affected women today like how social media can be a toxic environment for teenage girls, workplace discrimination, and issues with bad female representation in media. The group also highlighted their accomplishments like hosting movie nights and selling T-shirts as a scholarship fundraiser for girls in the Bay Shore School District. The students organized a celebration for the International Day of the Girl where they hosted women who served in the military and work in politics to speak to their classmates. The Women’s Empowerment Club was very proud that they were able to use their group to create a safe environment for women and allies to come together and have respectful conversations about how to tackle difficult issues. The presentation ended with the girls from the club, asking the Historical Society members about their experiences and the progress that they saw women achieve in their lifetimes.
