Longtime Islip resident and community leader Astrid Fidelia announced Monday her run for the 11th District of the Suffolk County Legislature.

Fidelia, running as a Democrat, has served as the Islip Rotary Club president and co-founder of Stand Up to Poverty, an organization that trains leaders to help bring resources to those in need.

The 11th District, represented by Legislator Steve Flotteron (R-West Islip), is located primarily on the western south shore of Suffolk, encompassing the Town of Islip, a portion of Fire Island and a small section of the Town of Babylon. The district includes all of West Islip and Brightwaters, most of Bay Shore and portions of Islip, Islip Terrace and Deer Park.

A licensed real estate associate broker at Jones Hollow Realty Group in East Islip, Fidelia previously served as the executive director of the Town of Islip Foreign Trade Zone Authority, where she fought for American businesses in the international arena.

Fidelia is also engaged in the Haitian-American community: she co-founded the Haitian American PAC, which serves as a voice for Haitian-Americans in the political sphere. Fidelia also served on the Suffolk County African-American Advisory Board.

According to a press release, "Astrid is ready to fight for the communities of the 11th District, and she has no tolerance for neglect from government. Astrid firmly believes all communities deserve their fair share and will fight to get LD-11 what it deserves."

Fidelia has spent 20 years in Islip with her husband Martin and raised her four children in the hamlet.
