An out-of-this-world event to celebrate the solar eclipse

Pat-Med Library hosts informational session and giveaway

On Sunday, the day before Monday’s solar eclipse, adults and families flocked to the Patchogue-Medford Library to learn about this rare event.

Library staff guided attendees through different activities, including making an ultraviolet bracelet, playing planetary hopscotch, and viewing a computer simulation showing what the eclipse will look like.

NASA solar system ambassador Robin Vernuccio was on hand to explain about the eclipse, and attendees took home a pair of glasses they could use to view the eclipse.

“It will be a fun day,” said Elizabeth Ramos, who heads the library’s family programming. “We’ll be teaching kids and getting them excited about the eclipse and then they can visit our website to learn more about it.”

Mika Cobb brought her son Jordan, 11, who called the afternoon “fun and educational.” A fan of anything having to do with space or science fiction, Jordan said he can’t wait to view his first solar eclipse, which he and his mom plan to do from the beach.
