Wanting to give people the chance to become art collectors this holiday season, Muñeca Arthouse in Blue Point, in conjunction with Colored Colors, is hosting a “$100 and Under” exhibit from now through Dec. 30.
Jose Tutiven, founder of Colored Colors, said part of his organization’s mission is to “be a hub for creatives on Long Island” as it is quite challenging for new artists to gain entry to established galleries.
The 23 artists are a combination of new and seasoned creators with vast and varied choices in subject matter, but all pieces are priced at $100 or lower.
“We wanted to do under a $100 to make it affordable,” said Tutiven. “It’s meant to be a quick gift you can pick up for someone or yourself to start collecting art.”
The show will continue until the end of December, but buyers may pick up their pieces before the holiday.
In the first weekend, with about 20 artists on display on Muñeca’s austere white walls with fun and whimsical candy centerpieces, eight pieces were already sold upon viewing.
Masterminding the logistics of such an enthralling and encompassing art show with so many artists was Eric Murphy, a professional art installer with an impressive résumé that includes curating art shows for Patchogue Arts Council, Stony Brook University, Long Island Art Museum, Farmingdale University, and the Islip Art Museum.
An artist himself, with a background in art history, Murphy’s keen knowledge and intuitive ability to “fit” works together came through for this first showing with intricate, but fitting pairings of both multiple pieces from one artist and juxtapositions of artists.
“It really comes down to the subject matter, size, scale, and color,” said Murphy, “You have to have a nice flow, so there can’t be clashing pieces.”
