9/11 at the Common Ground

Posted

The Sayville Common Ground at Rotary Park hosted a 9/11 Moonlight Memorial Service at 7 p.m. on the 20th anniversary of that historical day this past Saturday.

The annual event has been hosted in previous years, but this one was particularly poignant after last year’s pandemic affected the memorial ceremony.

Local elected officials spoke at the event, which included a candlelight labyrinth walk.

With no rain date, attendees had been encouraged to bring raincoats and umbrellas, but thankfully the evening was a cool, pre-fall day, much like the actual weather of 9/11 20 years ago.

A memorial stone at the park reads: “This precious park, conceived in the wake of September 11, 2001, is lovingly offered and maintained by the community. May it stand as a breathing testament to the infinite possibilities present when good people cherish their entire village as home and their neighbor as family. Like the splendid gardens it houses, may it flourish and grow.”
