Prepping for Bohemia Christmas parade

For a spectacular start to the holiday season, the Bohemia Fire Department is hosting their 34th annual Christmas parade along Smithtown Avenue (north of the recreation center) on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 5 p.m.

The parade committee has invited over 15 local fire departments and emergency response teams from the surrounding area, many of who have accepted with great enthusiasm. After the extravaganza of holiday-decorated fire trucks and floats, the Bohemia Fire Department will be inviting everyone back at the station house for cookies and hot chocolate. With such a large turnout each year, the fire department has had to outsource cookie making to local bakeries to keep up with the demand.

Previous years have had intricate float designs from fire departments, including snow globes, the entire cast from the “Polar Express,” and an especially memorable Jim Carrey’s “Grinch”-themed float. While all brothers-in-arms, the local fire departments do engage in some friendly, but fierce, competition as a panel of judges (all active community members) rate each float on creativity, appearance and originality.

Parade committee member Rich Gross insists that the Bohemia parade has “the real Santa Claus; we pick him up at MacArthur Airport.” However, the Suffolk County News has not been able to independently verify this claim at this time.
