Have a heart – adopt a pet
This weekend, both Islip and non-Islip residents will have a chance to give an animal a loving home. It’s an opportunity that takes place at the Islip Animal Shelter every day for sure, but the town is promoting this one a little differently.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, the shelter, which is located at 210 S. Denver Avenue in Bay Shore, will host “Clear the Shelter,” an annual nationwide event that was started by a major television network. The mission of this program is to entice would-be pet owners to take another look at their local rescue organization and shelters that are often teeming with animals that desperately need to find a home.
The Islip shelter is one of 120 agencies in the tri-state area that will be participating in this campaign and has done so annually for the past four years. Most of them are providing incentives on that day. Islip is offering a $50 one-day adoption fee on dogs and cats, too. That’s a good thing. The typical adoption fee ranges between $125-$131 for dogs and $100 for cats, which includes spay/neuter, microchipping and all immunizations.
The shelter has quite an array of breeds to choose from; there are dogs and cats of different sizes and ages as well. Some of them have never had a home. And sadly, there are others who have been brought there from broken homes for whatever reason. Their stories could break your heart.
Look, not everyone is meant to be a pet owner, as caring for one is a major commitment that should never be taken lightly. However, those who understand all of the responsibilities that come with owning a pet and are still prepared to take them on should certainly follow through. Rather than pay exorbitant store prices, though, try opening your heart and your home to one from a local shelter. This Saturday would be a great time to do it.
