Memorial Day parades and services

This Monday, May 27, is the official date to acknowledge Memorial Day this year. There are a number of events planned across our reader areas, where those who paid the ultimate price for freedom are honored. Here are the locations for those events.

The Bayport Fire Department is having their annual ceremony at Memorial Park on Monday at 11 a.m. Bob Draffin, president of the Bayport Chamber of Commerce, is once again the MC for this event.

The parade will commence a couple of blocks west of the park on Middle Road and Connetquot Avenue.  The Bayport-Blue Point marching band will provide musical entertainment as will a pipe band. The Bayport Fire Department and Boy Scouts will be marching as well. Six groups will be laying wreaths at the memorial.

The Bohemia Fire Department and American Legion Post 1146 will be hosting its annual Memorial Day Parade & Services on Monday, May 27 at 10 a.m.  The parade starts on the corner of Hubal Street and Ocean Avenue, where it will proceed down to Church Street and onto the John Pearl School for a memorial service at the Veterans Memorial (corner of Church Street and Smithtown Avenue).  After the completion of the service and the placing of the community wreaths, the parade will proceed down to the Bohemia Fire Department for another service, where there will be a special tribute to all the veterans in attendance.

Sayville Fire Department is sponsoring the parade that begins at Handsome Avenue. The marchers, which include Boy Scouts, members of the Lt. Michael Murphy Sea Cadets, members of the American Legion and VFW Posts, will proceed east on Main Street to Sparrow Park. At the park, a special ceremony and wreath-laying will take place.

The members of Smith-Wever American Legion Post 651 invite everyone back to the post after the ceremony. The Post is located at 23 Foster Avenue.
