Library budget time is here
ISLIP TOWN—The annual public library budget vote will be held on Tuesday, April 2 at each district’s library building. Elections for trustee will be held as well and this year it appears there is no contest.
Library director Mike Firestone noted that there would not be a budget vote this year since the budget is the same as last year: $2,478,809. He said that since the residents approved a bond to purchase the former St. Ursula Center on Middle Road last December, he didn’t want to further burden the taxpayers. “The board didn’t want to increase our operating budget,” Firestone added.
The plan for the new library building is underway, and Firestone said he expects the project to go out to bid at the end of this year. He added that the hope is to get the “shovel into the ground” next spring.
Incumbent trustee Susan Kennedy is running for another five-year term unopposed. Cast your ballot from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The library is located at 203 Blue Point Avenue in Blue Point.
Kimberly DeCristofaro, the library director, said that the budget for this year, which is increased by 2 percent, is still under the state’s cap. The total budget is $6,456,872. On an average assessed home, that increase would amount to $7 per year.
She said a lot more money would be going to providing classes and events. “That’s what we’re doing more of because that’s what our patrons want,” she added.
There is one board five-year seat that will be voted on, which is currently occupied by Susan Farfaro. She is running unopposed. The polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The library address is 760 Ocean Avenue in Bohemia.
The Sayville Library vote will be held in May during the annual school budget vote.
