Letter to the Editor
To the Editor:
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions just announced the creation of a Religious Liberty Task Force. This will just open the door to allow discrimination against the LGTBQ community and to women’s health.
In addition to bakeries refusing to provide wedding cakes to non-heterosexual couples, there are pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions for birth control or hormone therapy because it is not in line with their religion. Religious freedom ensures the right not to be discriminated against due to one’s religion. It does not and should not provide individuals or corporations the right to discriminate against others.
Anyone who thinks it’s okay to impose religious beliefs upon others should consider if any of these scenarios are acceptable:
• A grocery cashier removes a steak from the belt and refuses to ring it up because her religion does not allow for cows to be consumed.
• A clerk refuses to serve any women whose hair is not covered.
• An employer offers a health care plan that does not include blood transfusions because the owner’s religion believes that to be unacceptable.
If these examples sound inane to you, they sound just as ridiculous to members of the esteemed religions represented. That’s why you don’t read about members of these communities using their faith to discriminate. And yes, this is exactly the same thing.
