Island Hills addressed at town hall meeting, again

ISLIP TOWN—Those residents who didn’t speak at the Islip Town Board meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 23, in regards to councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt’s controversial Facebook post over the weekend, expressed their dissatisfaction with the proposed Island Hills Golf Club Development Plan, which seeks to build over 1300 rental apartments in 19 buildings (according to sayville-greybarn.com), most at a height of three to four stories, on Lakeland Avenue in Sayville. Rechler Equity Partners, a Plainview- and Westhampton-based developer, filed an application with the Town of Islip last year to change the zoning of Island Hills Golf Couse from AAA (residential) to planned development district.

Sayville resident Tom Kelly expressed his belief that Rechler wouldn’t have purchased the property if they didn’t know for certain they wouldn’t get the zoning change. “This is purely my opinion,” he said, insisting there is no proof of any dialogue between his elected representatives and the developer. “But if this [plan] gets approved,” Kelly said, “I’ll know what happened, and so will everyone else.”

Bohemia resident Kerry Michal said her fellow residents are convinced the Islip Town Board is taking donations from the developers and denying requests for town board meetings to be held later in the evening when more people can attend.

 This is the second month that Rechler wasn’t present at a town hall meeting.

Anne Marie Jones, a self-employed contractor who previously served as Babylon Town’s planning and developmental supervisor, spoke in favor of the project in November of last year. Jones said Rechler was committed to speaking and working closely with those who lived in the areas surrounding the Island Hills Golf Club.

 Bohemia resident Patrick Fife, who also serves as president of the Bohemia Civic Association, commended the Town of Islip for the cleanup after winter storm Grayson a few weeks back, but expressed concerns that they will ultimately approve of the Island Hills development. Fife explained that his organization is opposed to the plan, which he said would be like “dropping a city inside a suburb.”

 Sayville resident Patricia Carroll said Rechler is calling the Island Hills Golf Club “distressed” as justification for the unpopular plan. “They bought the property knowing it was for single-family homes,” she said. “That’s how it should stay.”

The Islip Town Board also addressed a full agenda of resolutions.

Supervisor Angie Carpenter was authorized to accept FAA Airport Improvement Program  grants, New York State and Suffolk County grant funds and collect passenger facility charges for 2018, including execution of any and all agreements, amendments and modifications. She was also authorized to execute all documents necessary for the approval of the change order to the contract with J. Anthony Enterprises relating to the console/radio systems and its associated antenna, as well as enter into an agreement with ComNet Software for the installation of a multi-user flight information display system with digital signage at Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Carpenter was authorized to both apply for and accept funding from Suffolk County Office for the Aging for the purpose of providing continued funding for a residential repair program, and execute a vehicle lease renewal agreement with Suffolk County Office for the Aging for a 2008, 14-passanger Ford E450, to provide transportation services to senior citizen residents of the Town of Islip. She was also authorized to enter into an agreement with both the Islip Arts Council to oversee and operate the museum through the end of the 2018 calendar year. 

The supervisor was authorized to enter into a lease agreement with Golden Flashes Real Estate, LL to permit the town to continue to use and operate property located between Candee and Gillette avenues in Sayville as a parking area. She was also authorized to enter into an emergency contract with Island Structures Engineering and Panzer Demo & Abatement Corp. to provide professional services in connection with the Town of Islip facility located at 161 2nd Avenue in Bay Shore.
