Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino (R,C,I Sayville) has been officially declared the Republican candidate for Congressman Peter King’s 2nd CD seat today, February 4.
Garbarino, who was elected to serve the 7th Assembly District in 2012 and was subsequently re-elected to his 4thterm, filed his statement of candidacy for King’s seat on December 6. King announced his retirement after serving 14 terms in November.
“I’ll finish out my term,” Garbarino said. “I won’t leave my constituents without representation. Session is over first week in June so that gives me time to campaign in between.”
Garbarino had gotten a heads up earlier but stayed mum.
“I was told the prior weekend, but it’s not official until it’s official,” Garbarino said. “I have 9 months of work to do and it’s a huge deal. I saw Peter King on Sunday and he offered me whatever help I needed. What’s really been awesome were the amount of texts I’ve gotten including my teacher from middle school, people who are not political, people who are not part of this world. It’s from people who are happy for me.”
Garbarino said his website went live on Monday.
King’s seat spans Suffolk and Nassau County. Garbarino got his candidacy’s blessing from Suffolk Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia and Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Cairo. The 2nd CD includes the townships of Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Babylon and Islip.
“I’ll start stumping in Nassau right away,” he said. “But we’ll be all over the place. We’ll do a rally in Nassau and one at home in the east where the supporters know me.”
Garbarino is currently the Ranking Minority Member of the Committee on Insurance and sits on Codes, Health, Higher Education and Racing and Wagering Committees among others. A Sayville High School graduate, he is an attorney at Garbarino Law Office in Sayville.
His campaign consultant is former Bayport resident, Russ Schriefer, Founding Partner of Strategic Partners & Media Inc. located in Annapolis, Maryland.
“We had an outstanding field of candidates at the beginning and end of this process,” said Suffolk County Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia. “We went through it very thoroughly, transparently and meticulously with members of our committee, our partners in our district, and stakeholders in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Andrew as a four time successfully elected assemblyman fought against Common Core, higher taxes and drove more resources to his Suffolk County communities. His district and electability led to us selecting him.”
According to sources, the Conservative Party as well as New York State Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy and Congressman Peter King are expected to endorse Garbarino this week.
