Earlier this week, Suffolk County executive Steve Bellone announced that whatever it might look like, summer is here, and the county is working to get things up and running so that residents can enjoy the summer season with restrictions, social distancing and face coverings in place.
“We are going to have a summer here, just doing things a little differently,” he promised.
Bellone said the county will be hosting a drive-in movie summer series starting at Smith Point County Park with “Jaws” on June 20, celebrating the 45th anniversary of the film.
“We hope it will be a safe new experience for kids who only know what they [drive-in movies] are like from pictures,” he added.
Beginning the new month, he continued, numbers have contin- ued to decline after the worst was experienced in April, with more than 1,000 residents succumbing to the virus and the hospitals stretched to their limits.
“Our numbers are declining, but there is still so much pain out there in our community, county and country,” he added, hoping to see more improvement this month. “We are looking to move into Phase 2 as quickly as we possibly can.”

• 39,705 tested positive for COVID-19 in Suffolk County, up by 62 in 24 hours
• 14,138 tested positive for anti- bodies
• As of May 30, there were 253 hospitalizations with 16 fewer patients in hospital beds
• 25 people were discharged
• Over 1,900 deaths, five in a recent 24-hour period
